On February 23, a bill was introduced in the Missouri state senate committing large portions of state infrastructure to sustainable practices.
Among the provisions of SB 430, any state building constructed or substantially renovated after August 28, 2009 must be certified by the U.S. Green Building Council as meeting its LEED-Silver rating or must meet at least a three globes rating under the Green Globes building rating system. Public colleges and universities are exempt from the state green building requirement and the Commissioner of the Office of Administration may exempt certain other buildings from this requirement for safety or cost reasons.
The bill also requires that state-purchased appliances be Energy Star-rated and provides for grants to public school districts to meet the green building requirements of up to a total of $500,000 per year.
As of April 29, the bill has received the recommendation of the Senate Agriculture, Food Production and Outdoor Resources Committee.
