On March 25, a bill was introduced in the North Carolina Senate that would create a separate Residential Building Code Council and North Carolina Residential Building Code, breaking code change reviews into residential and non-residential processes.
As of May 19, the bill had been referred to the Senate Committee on Commerce. However, the bill's sponsor (Sen. Clodfelter) has chosen to withdraw the bill from consideration due to the lack of agreement between the state's home builders (who supported the measure) and the Department of Insurance (which was worried about representation on the two councils becoming too tilted towards developers).
